Week 13

The main rhetorical devices I use in my writing are Logos and Ethos. These work for academic writing as they focus on other facts and the previous knowledge of the reader. I utilize Logos as I talk about the parallels between Prospero and shakespeare as well as when I discuss the locations of the travelers landing on the island. Logos is what I use the most as the writings of others and using their credibility helps to create my own credibility and gain the trust of the reader.

I noticed rhetoric in an argument between a customer and one of the managers at my work. The customer was arguing that employees should wear gloves at all times. They argue that this would be safest using a sense of logic, as they state that wearing gloves would stop the spread of the virus as the gloves would remain sterile. How ever our manager countered with the fact that we need to save the gloves for health care workers, which means that we would have to use the gloves for multiple orders. However the gloves being used more than once is actually worse as people don’t wash their gloves but do sanitize their hands. This allied to logic and the customer ended up agreeing that as long as the employees didn’t touch their faces and sanitized their hands often that they would be safer with out gloves.

The argument that has been circulating is the re-opening of the state. Many argue logically saying that re-opening too early could cause the virus to take off again. They say that opening too soon could actually lead to an even longer quarantine. Others argue that opening slowly would keep the virus in a downward slope. They also apply to pathos as they talk about the emotions that ending quarantine would bring happiness.
